Volvo

Ask: People don’t feel safe, despite being the safest they’ve ever been. Using Volvo’s name in safety, develop a new technology to not only protect human life, but make people feel safer too.

Insight: In 2020 alone, it’s estimated that 104,000 pedestrians were treated for on-foot crash-related injuries just in the US

Idea: What if we develop a new technology using Volvo’s existing LiDAR safety feature to scan intersections and crosswalks to protect pedestrians from drivers running red lights.

How It Works:
On each crosswalk, LiGuard will analyze a car’s speed to determine whether or not it’ll run a red light.

If it’s determined the car will run the red light, then LiGuard will warn the pedestrian about to cross with flashing signage and a loud audio alert.

Using Volvo’s connected safety features, LiGuard can alert drivers about potential dangers in an upcoming intersection.

If a driver is about to enter an intersection – and a nearby driver is about to run a red light – then LiGuard will send out an in-car alert.

If that alert is ignored, then LiGuard can activate the car’s auto brake system to prevent a collision.
